Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Element 1 Practice Test

To set-up the MF/HF transceiver for a voice call to a coast station, the operator must:

Select J3E mode for proper SITOR operations

Select F1B mode or J2B mode, depending on the equipment manufacturer

Select J3E mode for proper voice operations

Choosing J3E mode is essential for establishing voice communication over MF/HF transceivers, as it specifically indicates the use of single sideband (SSB) voice transmission. J3E is the designation used in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for amplitude modulation (AM) and single sideband, particularly suited for voice services. This mode allows for clearer audio transmission over long distances, which is crucial in maritime communications where coast stations often operate.

In contrast, other modes mentioned, such as F1B and J2B, are primarily used for data communication, which is not suitable for voice calls. F1B is used for frequency shift keying (FSK), often for digital data, while J2B refers to a double sideband operation typically utilized for specific types of data transmission and may not provide the clarity and functionality required for voice conversations.

Thus, selecting J3E ensures the transceiver is appropriately configured for two-way voice operations, facilitating better communication between the vessel and coast station.

Select F1B/J2B modes or J3E mode, depending on whether FEC or ARQ is preferred
